Overview of the humanitarian situation

On Sunday 26 May, Tropical Cyclone Remal made landfall near the Bangladesh-India border, in the western part of the Sundarbans in Shatkhira district. The highest recorded wind speed was 120 km/h shortly after midnight. The storm surge, accompanied by extremely heavy rainfall, caused flooding of 5-8 feet in the coastal districts. According to Government reports, well over 800,000 people were evacuated to over 9,000 evacuation shelters across 19 districts. As of 30 May, 4.6 million people were affected; at least 16 people died, over 170,000 houses were damaged or destroyed, and an estimated 17 million people remained without power. As the first cyclonic storm of the 2024 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, Tropical Cyclone Remal is reportedly the most devastating cyclone to affect Bangladesh in recent years.

CERF-funded assistance

In response, the ERC on 30 May allocated $7.5 million to provide critical humanitarian assistance to affected people. This allocation builds on the extensive work already done over the past months under the anticipatory action framework and would allow humanitarian partners to immediately launch critical relief efforts to support affected people with cash, WASH, health, protection and food security activities. This allocation targets about 300,000 people with life saving assistance, of whom 80,320 are women, 140,860 are children, 78,820 are men, and 8,400 are persons with disabilities.
