Project overview
The main objective of UNICEF’s CERF-funded project was to provide life-saving WASH interventions to communities and schools in Marsabit and Mandera counties affected by drought and El Niño floods. The project directly supported 45,271 people, including 27,883 schoolchildren in 55 schools and 17,388 community members, by rehabilitating water supply systems, ensuring each person had access to 15 liters of safe water per day. Hygiene promotion efforts included training 50 school health club patrons and healthcare workers on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) and WASH practices. Additionally, 366 school Board of Management members were sensitized on infrastructure maintenance, ensuring sustainability. In 35 healthcare facilities, water storage capacity was improved, while 12,223 adolescent girls received sanitary pads and hygiene training, addressing menstrual health needs. Despite challenges like flooding that displaced thousands, the project significantly improved access to safe water and sanitation, strengthening resilience in affected communities.
