CERF-funded Project

South Sudan

Emergency assistance to food insecurity affected communities in South Sudan (21-RR-CEF-010)

Project overview

With this CERF-funded project, UNICEF and its partners strengthened a mutli-sector humanitarian response targeting highly food insecure populations in six priority locations through activities in the nutrition, child protection, gender-based violence (GBV), water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and logistics sectors. The project addressed malnutrition by supporting the nutritional needs of 4,921 people and promoted the wellbeing of vulnerable groups, including women and children, by providing tailored GBV and child protection services such as case management, referrals and psychosocial support. The WASH component of the project additionally rehabilitated 101 boreholes with handpumps, constructed 15 new handpumps, installed and operated one emergency surface water treatment unit, constructed 383 latrines, provided hygiene items to 357,444 people, and reached 103,562 individuals with hygiene promotion messaging. Finally, UNICEF used CERF funds to operate three boats in key locations, ensuring access for humanitarian responders.
