CERF Allocation

Democratic Republic of the Congo

Displacement/Migration, 17 Dec 2025

Overview

Since early December, escalating armed conflict in South Kivu, DRC, has displaced more than 500,000 people, with secondary movements into Tanganyika and across the border into Burundi. In the DRC, families are sheltering in overcrowded sites, public spaces, or with overstretched hosts, while health facilities are damaged or overwhelmed. In Burundi, 85,000 new arrivals, including Congolese refugees and Burundian returnees, have further strained an already fragile system, with border points and transit centers operating at nearly double capacity. Both contexts face acute shortages of shelter, food, water, health services, and protection, alongside heightened risks of disease outbreaks such as cholera.
