Overview of the humanitarian situation

About 80,000 people were affected by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Vanuatu on 17 December 2024. The area most affected is the densely populated capital city of Port Vila. Nine people were killed and over 200 injured. Infrastructure damage was extensive, including to two major water reservoirs. The Government declared a state of emergency.

CERF-funded assistance

In response to the crisis, CERF allocated $1 million from its Rapid Response window for humanitarian action. This funding enables UN agencies and partners to provide life-saving assistance to 8,300 people, including 2,040 women, 2,041 men, 4,219 children, and including 329 people with disabilities in the following sectors: Camp Management, Health, Protection, including from gender-based violence and for children, Shelter and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.
