Overview of the humanitarian situation
About 230,706 newly internally displaced persons (IDPs) were reported between January and May 2025, an increase of 934% over the past five months. April 2025 saw the highest number of new displacements per month, approximately 120,000 people, since 2022. With an increase of more than 1,400% in newly displaced persons between January and May 2025, the Boucle du Mouhoun region is particularly affected, accounting for 106,196 people alone, particularly in Sourou province. The Centre-East comes in second place with 17% (38,378 people) and an increase rate of more than 1,051% between March and April to May 2025. The East region recorded 19,819 new displacements. For some areas, this is the highest increase in more than two years. This increase is explained by the multiple attacks recorded in these regions against civilian populations.
CERF-funded assistance
In response to this critical situation, CERF allocated US$5.9 million to address the most urgent needs of newly displaced people in the Boucle du Mouhoun, East, and Center-East regions. This allocation enables a rapid, targeted, and integrated response, including emergency shelter and essential household items (EHEI), food, and health needs, using a holistic approach. This allocation is implemented by UNHCR, WFP, and WHO, in complementarity with an upcoming allocation from OCHA's regional fund for Central and Western Africa, which will cover the remaining gaps.
