Overview of the humanitarian situation
Flooding across Nigeria has become a major humanitarian crisis, with 31 States and 196 local government areas (LGAs) severely affected. Over 1 million people have been impacted by the relentless rains and damaged dams, leading to widespread displacement, loss of lives, and destruction of homes and livelihoods. The floods have so far displaced over 655,011 people, with 297 people reported dead, and up to 2,653 people injured. Houses, farmlands, and critical infrastructure have been devastated, with nearly 101,603 homes affected according to data collected by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on 23 September 2024. A cholera outbreak was declared on 21 September in Adamawa State. Access to affected areas has been significantly hampered by the collapse of critical infrastructure, and forecasts indicate that accumulated rainfall could increase significantly in the coming weeks, posing a higher risk of flash floods and the destruction of additional homes and infrastructure.
CERF-funded assistance
In response to the crisis, the Emergency Relief Coordinator allocated US$5 million from CERF’s Rapid Response window for the immediate commencement of life-saving activities to address the most critical and urgent needs of populations in Borno, Bauchi and Sokoto states in Nigeria, the states hardest hit by the floods. CERF funding will act as a catalyst for coordinated action between government agencies and humanitarian actors, reinforcing collaboration and information-sharing to deliver more efficient, targeted responses. Further, the allocation encourages increased use of cash and voucher assistance (CVA), especially multi-purpose cash. This CERF allocation enables UN agencies and partners to provide emergency, life-saving assistance to over 525,000 flood-affected people in the Campo Coordination and Camp Management, Food Security (including Agriculture and Food Assistance), Health (including Sexual and Reproductive Health), Nutrition, Protection (including Child Protection and GBV), Shelter, and WASH sectors, including through supporting the UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS).
