CERF Allocation

Guinea

Flood, 12 Dec 2024

Overview of the humanitarian situation

Starting in August 2024, incessant rains caused massive flooding in 18 prefectures, seriously affecting more than 175,00 people, including an estimated 2,834 pregnant women, 5,115 nursing mothers, 1,258 people with reduced mobility, 7,220 elderly people, 15,374 school children, and 869 displaced households. The floods destroyed more than 900 houses and damaged approximately 2,642 water points, 3,649 latrines, 40 schools, and 15 health facilities.Residents were left without adequate access to health care, education, and water and sanitation facilities. Population displacements following the floods increased the risks of the spread of diseases such as cholera and malaria, as well as of new tensions for access to limited resources in host areas.

CERF-funded assistance

In response to the crisis, the Emergency Relief Coordinator allocated $2.5 million from CERF’s Rapid Response window for humanitarian action. This funding enables UN agencies and partners to provide life-saving assistance to 83,154 people, including 34,0220 women, 19,522 men, 29,610 children, and including 1,258 people with disabilities in the WASH, education, food assistance and health sectors.
