Project overview
FAO, with CERF funding, implemented a drought mitigation project in Turkana and Wajir Counties, Kenya, aimed at improving food security, protecting livelihoods, and enhancing resilience among pastoral and agropastoral communities. The project provided livestock feed supplementation to 1,600 households, ensuring the survival of core breeding stock and sustaining milk production. To prevent livestock disease outbreaks, FAO also conducted vaccination and treatment campaigns, safeguarding animal health and preserving pastoral livelihoods. Additionally, cash-based transfers (CBT) supported vulnerable households, enabling them to meet urgent food and basic needs while reducing reliance on negative coping mechanisms. The intervention also strengthened community-based early warning systems and climate-adaptive practices, equipping local populations with sustainable solutions to withstand future droughts. Through these targeted efforts, FAO’s project played a critical role in stabilizing food security, preventing asset loss, and supporting long-term resilience in Kenya’s drought-affected regions.
