Project overview

The main objective of this project is to provide life-saving protection, water, sanitation, hygiene and education assistance to host communities, displaced people and returnees in the provinces of Ituri, North-Kivu and South-Kivu. This UNHCR project works with communities to identify protection needs, conducts protection monitoring, contributes to the registration of displaced people, supports community-based conflict resolution, strengthens systems to prevent sexual- and gender-based violence, constructs boreholes to provide communities access to safe drinking water, distributes hygiene kits, constructs family latrines and showers, supports access to primary education, and provides psycho-social support to children. The protection component of the project provides life-saving assistance to 732,245 people, including 234,318 women, 175,739 boys and 205,028 girls. The water, sanitation and hygiene component provides life-saving assistance to 25,000 people, including 5,457 women, 7,224 boys and 7,393 girls. The education component provides life-saving assistance to 5,309 people, including 900 women, 1,520 boys and 2,280 girls. Exceptionally this project will be implemented over the course of 18 months.
