Underfunded Emergencies: 2018 first allocation round: DRC

In 2017, the dramatic deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) led to the activation of an IASC
Level 3 emergency, focusing on the crises in the Kasai region and Tanganyika and South Kivu provinces. With 2.16 million people newly
displaced inside the country in 2017, the DRC now has 4.49 million internally displaced people (IDPs), making it the African country with the highest
number of internally displaced persons. DRC also hosts around 540,000 refugees from neighboring countries, primarily Burundi, Central African
Republic, Rwanda and South Sudan. Across the country, some 13.1 million people require humanitarian assistance and protection in 2018
including around 7.7 million severely food insecure people and more than 2 million severely acutely malnourished children.
